About the Kansas City Art Institute
The Kansas City Art Institute is a four year school of higher education for fine arts and design, located in Kansas City, Missouri. It was started by a group who called themselves the "sketch club" and wanted a place to meet regularly and discuss art within the city. In 1887 they had their first collective exhibition, which attracted patrons who created the Art Institute officially. Today, the private and independent four year college boasts 75 faculty members and over 600 students.
The 75 acre campus is full of interesting historical buildings worth a tour. A Germanic Castle was purchased in the 1920s to become part of the campus, and today there are additional buildings like the Mineral Hall and the Wight and Wight addition. Some buildings are even recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. Two art galleries border the campus, making access easy to budding art students. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is one, and it contains a large amount of Asian art within the beautiful architecture of the building. The second is the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, which houses modern pieces sure to inspire students.
Aside from the museums adjacent to the school, Kansas City is a vibrant city that is home to stunning architecture, delicious food, and a truly welcoming population.
